“Here I came to the very edge
where nothing at all needs saying,
everything is absorbed through weather and the sea,
and the moon swam back,
its rays all silvered,
and time and again the darkness would be broken
by the crash of a wave,
and every day on the balcony of the sea,
wings open, fire is born,
and everything is blue again like morning. ”
– Pablo Neruda
Where We Stayed: Monterey Tides Hotel in Monterey, California, located on a little stretch of golden beach that is all its own, 10 minutes from Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row – the setting for Steinbeck’s famous sardine-cannery street lined 1945 novel. At Monterey Tides, mid-century influences and Mexican-inspired accents compliment each other to create a classic surf vibe imbued with textures, colors, and nature.
What We Ate: Cafe Beach serves organic, fresh, California coastline fare and is located on the top floor of the hotel, with sweeping bay views and a rustic but cozy interior.
Succulents surround you and the deep blue hues of the walls calm you, much like the subtle acoustic crashing of the waves below…Tapa: We had the lobster timbale, with avocado, mango and maria rose sauce, bold in both presentation and flavor but comforting, too. Timbale is a dish of finely minced meat or fish cooked in a cylindrical mold that equally resembles a tiny food sculpture, and maria rose sauce is a British condiment made from a blend of tomatoes, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and pepper (in other words, cocktail sauce). The shape and the textures of both these things together were beautiful and forced us to stop, breathe, and take our time while eating.
