“After all,” Anne had said to Marilla once, “I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.” ― L.M. Montgomery
Do you ever saunter into a place and feel as if you’ve been there before?
The people, the smells, the artwork on the walls, even the pale sunshine yellow quilt on the bed – all seemed reminiscent of a place we already knew.
Hotel Santa Barbara is located on State Street in downtown Santa Barbara, California, a street that reflects the city’s Spanish colonial heritage through Mediterranean-style white stucco buildings and red tile roofs.
The walls of the hotel are full of vintage Santa Barbara photography and even the fine folks working in the lobby seemed to have taken a step back in time as they greeted us with friendly hellos and directed us up the vibrant tile staircase to our room.
After dozing off on our cloud-like bed, we awoke the next morning to the smell of freshly brewed local coffee and pastries and wandered to Whole Foods to gather mandarines.
Our reason for the hotel stay was a book signing at Williams-Sonoma with food samples, but we quickly realized we had no where to prepare our food – a minor detail we seemed to have overlooked.
The staff ushered us into the back kitchen at the hotel and kindly allowed us to prepare our dark chocolate tangerine slices as a few women hummed along cleaning the breakfast plates.
We were so thankful and relieved and felt so much appreciation.
Being on the road there are always those people and places that remind us of home. And home is a funny feeling; you can’t always pinpoint exactly what it is but there’s always a warmth to it. There’s always a gratefulness it provides you with. There’s always a feeling that fills you and lifts you up.
As we ate our pastries that morning and sipped our coffee, we were at home in the Hotel Santa Barbara.
And, as with all places we love, we know we’ll return again someday.
xoxo
